Juvenile arthritis on the increase

Arthritis is commonly associated with age, however, its prevalence is said to be increasing among youths according to a study performed by the Ohio State University Medical Center (OSU).  Early diagnoses can be critical in reducing the long-term effects the disease can potentially inflict, with specialists at physical therapy Freehold New Jersey developing practices to tackle its onset and progression across all stages.

Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis (JRA) affects over 300,000 children in the United States, with the symptoms differing from those associated with older ages.  While there is no direct cure for arthritis, treatment focuses on the different variants of JRA, with physical therapy considered to be an important part of a child’s treatment plan.  The symptoms causing JRA can be “chronic or continuous”, and are as noted by the OSU:

-          Stiffness when awaking and joint pain during the day.

-          Swelling around joints.

-          Reduced activity level.

-          Awkward or deliberately slow movements.

-          The condition does not improve over time.

While differentiating between the severities of potential symptoms can prove difficult; continued vigilance and consultation with a doctor or a physical therapist can assist in effectively reducing the rate at which the disease progresses.
